A treasure trove of ancient gold coins worth $10 million was discovered in California. A married couple, walking their dog in the garden near their home, found something unusual under a tree. Having dug a little deeper, they found a bucket, up to the top filled with gold coins dating from 1847-1894 years.

The stash turned out to contain just over 1,400 coins in excellent condition, as officially confirmed by professional numismatist David Hall of Santa Ana. Some of the coins are valued at $27,000, and there are some whose value exceeds $1 million.

“It’s an incredible unique find, you could say they discovered a pot of gold on the edge of the rainbow,” said renowned coin collector Don Cagin. The happy couple asked not to name names or tell where exactly the spot is, so as not to cause a relapse into “gold rush” and attract an army of people with metal detectors there.

The couple is putting most of the coins up for online auction, and the rest will be given to the American Numismatists Association.
