The “Break-In” That Turned Out to Be Lipstick

On my way home—exhausted and dreaming of collapsing on the couch—I noticed something strange. There was a bright red smudge on the door lock, almost like wax. My heart skipped a beat.

“Did someone try to break in? Did a thief leave a mark to come back later?” I looked around, but the hallway was empty. I grabbed my phone, ready to call the police, when one small detail made me pause. The color looked too bold, almost… intentional.

When I touched it, I realized it was—lipstick.

Then it hit me: that morning my wife had rushed out, her bag stuffed with makeup and her keys tossed in among everything else. Her lipstick must have opened and smeared onto the keys, leaving that mark when she turned them in the lock.

My tension disappeared instantly, and I burst out laughing. When my wife came home, I showed her the mark with a mischievous grin. She was confused at first, then began laughing too.

“Be careful with your lipstick next time, or I swear I’m calling the police!” I joked.

And just like that, over a simple accident, I almost became the hero of the day—the guy who stopped a crime that never even happened!
