The White Grains in My Bed That Nearly Gave Me a Heart Attack

I woke up one morning and noticed some strange white grains in my bed. At first, I thought my husband had been eating in bed again and spilled rice or something similar. I was about to just brush them off, but something made me take a closer look.

The more I looked, the more a chill ran down my spine. The grains were tiny, oval, shiny—and then I saw something moving inside one of them. I panicked and immediately grabbed my phone to search for answers. My heart dropped when I realized what they were.

Be careful if you ever find something like this in your home… (continued in the first comment)

They turned out to be bedbug eggs.
Here’s what I learned about them:

  • Bedbug eggs are tiny—about 1 mm—white, oval, and shiny, almost like grains of rice.

  • Females lay them in hidden spots: mattress seams, behind baseboards, cracks in furniture.

  • After 6–10 days, the eggs hatch and the nymphs begin to feed on blood.

  • Bedbugs don’t usually transmit diseases, but their bites cause itching, allergies, irritation, and sleepless nights.

Where they come from:

  • They can hitch a ride in your suitcase after traveling.

  • They can come in with used furniture or secondhand items.

  • They can even spread from neighbors through ventilation or cracks in the walls.

How to get rid of them:

  • Clean thoroughly and vacuum every crack, seam, and crevice.

  • Wash bedding and clothing at at least 140°F (60°C).

  • Steam-treat mattresses and furniture.

  • The safest option is to call a professional extermination service—otherwise, they often come back.

Now I understand: if I hadn’t noticed those “grains” when I did, I would’ve had a full-blown infestation in just a few days.
