Today, more and more women are confidently embracing their natural beauty — in every shape and size — a movement amplified by social media.

A recent study published in the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology and Education highlights this shift: the average clothing size for American women is now a 16 or 18, compared to the previous average of 14.

Analyzing data from more than 5,500 women across the United States, researchers found that the average waist measurement has increased from 34.9 inches to 37.5 inches over the past two decades.

According to Susan Dunn, lead author of the study, “understanding these changes is essential for women’s self-esteem.” Along with co-author Deborah Christel, she urges the fashion industry to stop ignoring these realities.

“These women aren’t going anywhere — they’re here, living their lives, and they deserve clothing that fits their bodies,” Dunn emphasizes.

The conclusion is clear: designers must rethink their sizing standards to better reflect the real shapes and sizes of women today.
