When Kindness Turns Dangerous: The Day My Dog Swallowed Metal Screws

I’ve always loved animals—especially dogs. I have two, and most of their time is spent playing in the yard. One of them is particularly energetic, and I’ll admit, pretty loud.

The neighbors often complained about his barking, and eventually, I started receiving anonymous notes asking me to keep him quiet. The messages became more frequent, so I decided to limit his time outdoors.

But soon after, I noticed a worrying change in his behavior. He became lethargic and withdrawn, which was completely out of character. Concerned, I rushed him to the vet, fearing the worst—but I wasn’t prepared for what they found.

After an exam and an urgent ultrasound, the veterinarian discovered something horrifying: nearly 30 metal screws were lodged in my dog’s stomach. Somehow, he had swallowed them. The vet explained that if they reached his intestines, it could have been fatal. We were lucky to catch it in time.

I immediately contacted the police, who launched an investigation. Unfortunately, they couldn’t identify a suspect, but I couldn’t stop thinking about those angry anonymous letters. The thought that someone might have deliberately tried to harm him sent chills down my spine.

Since then, I’ve become far more vigilant with my dogs and never leave them outside unsupervised. This terrifying experience opened my eyes to the cruelty some people are capable of—but thankfully, my dog is safe, recovering, and still barking away.
