A dermatologist suggests that certain serious illnesses — including cancer — may sometimes be associated with changes in body odor. Dr. Irina Skorogodaeva, speaking on the Russian TV channel Russia 1, noted that some medical conditions can cause unusual or distinctive smells in a person’s sweat.

She emphasized that body odor alone is not enough to diagnose any disease, but unexpected changes can be a sign that someone should seek medical evaluation.

According to Dr. Skorogodaeva, some illnesses may produce specific odors. For example, certain cancers have been reported to cause a scent resembling “old meat.” Kidney and liver disorders may lead to an ammonia-like smell, while people with uncontrolled diabetes can sometimes give off an odor similar to rotten apples or acetone due to the buildup of ketones.

She added that persistent, unexplained fever can also be a concerning symptom. Other warning signs that should be evaluated by a healthcare professional include new or unusual lumps, changes in moles or warts, a chronic cough, sudden hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, and ongoing digestive issues.

Experts stress that unusual odors are not proof of any disease, and only proper medical testing can confirm a diagnosis.
