The Frozen Snake in My Freezer

This morning I opened the freezer to grab some ice for my coffee. Everything seemed normal — bread, ice, frozen veggies.

At first, I thought I spotted something weird and assumed it was just a spoiled food item. But then… it started moving.

My eyes landed on the top shelf. Among the usual bags of frozen food was something strange — long, beige, and spotted. I knew I had never put anything like that there.

Initially, I thought it might be some forgotten sausage or frozen dough. But when I reached out, the “thing” moved. Slowly, but definitely. My heart stopped for a moment — it was…

A snake.

It was nearly motionless, curled up, but its eyes were wide open. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. How could a snake survive in a freezer at -0.4°F (-18°C)?

Later, I learned that some snake species can enter a state called “torpor,” where their metabolism slows almost to zero. Their breathing and heartbeat nearly stop, allowing them to survive extreme cold.

It might have snuck in through a back vent or ended up in a bag of produce from a farm.

The scariest part? When I opened the freezer door, the warm air started to slowly thaw it out. The snake began to move, stretch, and lift its head.

I jumped back, slammed the door, and ran out of the kitchen.

Now the freezer is turned off, and I’m waiting for the experts to check how it survived — and whether there might be any other “visitors” hiding in my house.
