My husband gave my luxury SUV to his sister without even asking me. When I confronted him about it, he just laughed: “Why does a stay-at-home wife even need a car?” I stayed silent. Now he’s calling me desperately, begging me not to sell the house.

It was a Tuesday morning. I was in the kitchen serving breakfast to the kids when I looked out the window and saw my sister-in-law, Lucía, driving off in my car. My car.

A black Volvo XC90 I’d bought two years ago with my grandmother’s inheritance, registered and insured in my name.  I assumed Javier had lent it to her for some “urgent” errand, so I stayed quiet. But when he walked into the house—calm, coffee in hand, his tie slightly crooked—I asked him straight:

— Where’s my car?

He didn’t even look up from his phone.

— I gave it to Lucía. She needs it more than you do.

For a moment, I thought I’d misheard.

— Excuse me?

Finally, he glanced at me with that tired, faintly smirking look he always used when dismissing my reactions.

— Elena, you’re home all day. Why does a stay-at-home wife need a luxury car?

He said it quietly, almost mockingly, as if explaining something obvious to a distracted child. Marta, my eldest, slowly put down her spoon.  Daniel watched silently.

I felt a sharp pressure in my chest—not anger, but clarity. Lucía had spent years depending on others. Her mother had paid her rent. Then Javier had helped her open a beauty salon, which closed within a year. Then credit cards, “temporary” loans, late-night calls.

There was always an excuse. And Javier was always there, covering her problems with money that wasn’t entirely his.

— Tell her to give back the keys, I said.

Javier sighed.

— Don’t make a scene.

— I’m not doing anything. Just tell her to return my car keys.

— Incredible, he muttered, then added, — You don’t even earn a paycheck, and you act like you’re the one supporting the house.

I didn’t answer. I cleared the table, washed Daniel’s face, and braided Marta’s hair for school. I did it all calmly—even I was surprised at myself. Javier left half an hour later, convinced he’d won another battle, while in reality, his behavior had only worn him out.
