The house was completely full. It was our 10th wedding anniversary, and David and I were hosting a huge dinner party for our families. The atmosphere was loud, filled with laughter, clinking glasses, and the smell of roasted garlic. To keep the mood festive, David had connected his laptop to the massive 75-inch living room TV to play a slideshow of our photos from the past decade.

Everyone was smiling, watching us age gracefully on the screen. I was in the kitchen pouring more wine when I heard the music suddenly stop.

Then came the silence. A heavy, suffocating silence that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

I walked back into the living room. Nobody was looking at me. They were all staring at the TV screen, their faces pale, frozen in absolute shock. My mother was covering her mouth, tears already welling up in her eyes. David was standing by the TV, his face completely drained of color, frantically looking for the remote.

The room spun. My dead sister was alive. My husband was looking at me with terror in his eyes. And the two children I had been raising alone, thinking they were my orphaned niece and nephew… were actually his.
