The world learned about this amazing cat in the spring of 1996. One night, a fire broke out in one of the abandoned garages in the city of Brooklyn. Later it turned out that they did it deliberately.

Since it was at night, the special services were called and did not arrive immediately. Fortunately, there were no people inside. Similar situations periodically happen around the world, and this incident in one of the sleeping areas could well have gone unnoticed if it were not for the heroine of our article, a cat named Scarlett, who committed a real heroic deed.

The first person to spot her at the scene was lifeguard David Gianelli. He tried to catch the cat and carry it away from the fire, but the man failed to do so. In front of the surprised rescuer, she carried a tiny kitten out of the fire and carried it to a safe place. She then delivered four more kittens. Every time he left the building, the animal’s body was damaged. The eyes, paws, ears and tail were badly damaged.

When the mother-heroine carried her fifth baby, there was practically no hair left on her back. Immediately after the incident, the rescuers took the cat to the nearest veterinary clinic, where she and her kittens were treated. The cubs suffered much less than the mother, but one of them still could not be saved.

A week later, all of America found out about this case, and a few months later the shelter where Scarlett and her kids were kept began to receive calls from all over the world. People who learned about the heroic deed of the mother cat asked how they could help. Many wanted to take Scarlett and her babies to their home. As a result, all rescued kittens found their new owners. Scarlett, on the other hand, found a caring hostess in the person of Karen Wellen from Brooklyn.

Interest in the heroic cat did not subside in the media for a very long time. Scarlett appeared on the most popular TV channels and received the title of “The cat of the century”. After all the events, the heroine lived for more than twelve years. The hostess surrounded her with care and warmth. Scarlett passed away in 2008. In her honor, a prize was established, which is now awarded to animals that have committed a heroic deed. Thank you for reading.
