Every day my wife’s boss calls her in the morning and asks her to cover other employees’ shifts – I gave her boss a perfect lesson.

That morning, I woke up early to surprise Mira with breakfast. The smell of fresh coffee filled our small apartment as I made pancakes for breakfast.

The first one was ready when Mira my wife,, still sleepy, hugged me from behind and it seemed to me that it was the perfect start of the morning. I turned, smiled, and kissed her forehead.

“Good morning, sleepyhead,” I said. “The breakfast is almost ready.”

We sat by the window, enjoying pancakes and coffee as the morning sunlight filled the room. We laughed, made weekend plans, and enjoyed the peace of the perfect morning. But it didn’t last long.

Mira’s phone rang too early in the morning and disturbed the peace… again… It was her boss, Gabriel, asking her to cover for a coworker’s shift. She sighed, agreed, and rushed off. We didn’t even enjoy our breakfast yet.

It wasn’t a surprise for us, it kept happening—morning after morning, urgent calls, more work, less sleep, stress and not being able to rest and get ready for the text day. She was exhausted and I noticed that day by day. Dark circles deepened under her eyes. I tried to help, but it was wearing her down.

One night, I finally said, “This has to stop, Mira. You can’t keep doing this to yourself”

She shrugged. “I don’t want to cause trouble at work.”

I had an idea. “What if you called Gabriel in the middle of the night, like he does to you?”

Mira laughed but seemed to consider it. That night, at 3:30 a.m., she nervously picked up her phone and dialed.

“Hello, Gabriel,” she said politely. “Just checking if anyone needs help right now.” A groggy voice responded, “Mira, it’s three in the morning! Why are you calling?”

She stayed firm. “Since you wake me up every morning, I thought it was fair.” The next day, Mira went to work anxious, but to her surprise, Gabriel apologized and promised to fix the scheduling. And he did. The early calls stopped.

A week later, she came home smiling. “I actually enjoyed work today!” It was what I was waiting to hear from her.

That Saturday, I woke up next to her—no phone calls interrupting our rest. “No calls?” I asked.

She smiled. “No calls.”

As we ate pancakes, I felt like we had won something important. Setting boundaries takes courage, but facing challenges together makes everything easier.
