Head-fused twins celebrate their fourth birthday. How they feel after the separation operation

Parents of Siamese twins Yigit and Derman Evrensel are now looking at their children in a special way: they just cannot believe that the kids were given a chance for a new life. But not everything was so rosy in the beginning. Indeed, on June 21, 2018, the mother of the twins, seeing them after childbirth, could not hold back her tears. But unfortunately, not tears of joy…

Twins with two separate bodies and fused skulls were born. After giving birth, there is a small chance for the survival of such babies. Death usually occurs a few days after delivery.

Explanations for the diagnosis

The spouses found out about the pathology of pregnancy at the first screening, but refused to have an abortion. A pious family from Turkey saw in this the providence of God and a promise from Allah. And Evrensels never regretted their decision.

Money for the separation of the twins was collected by the whole country and with the direct participation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his wife Emine. Such a difficult operation could only be performed by surgeons from England at the Great Ormond Street Hospital, where similar interventions have already been performed.

The procedure was carried out by a team of 42 specialists and was divided into three operations. The kids left Turkey on January 28, 2020, and were able to return to their homeland four and a half months later on June 10, 2022.

On June 21, 2022, the kids celebrated their 4^th birthday happily together! Now the twin brothers are undergoing rehabilitation at the “Ankara Şehir Hastanesi” hospital. The course of treatment is going well and there is progress in the recovery of the babies. Derman is already walking, but Yigit needs time for physical activity, but this is all ahead. Everyone is so happy to see them happy and that the biggest difficulty id already in past.
