When we experience extreme stress or danger sometimes we forget how to act and what is the right thing to do. And that is about everyone, but not the little girl who is the hero of this story that we want to tell you. In 2015, Angela Shymanski was driving in the Canadian Rockies. She was with her daughter Lexi, 5, and infant son Peter. In the road while driving she grew drowsy and fell asleep at the wheel.

The car swerved off the road and went down a 40-foot embankment. The car crashed at the bottom. Angela’s back was unfortunately broken. Peter was awake and crying. They needed emergency surgery immediately. This is when Lexi unbuckled her five-point harness, escaped from the wreckage and climbed up the impossibly steep hill to flag down a car to rescue her family. And she did that barefoot.

In the interview her mother told that she still doesn’t believe that her 5 year old daughter could do that barefoot, frightened. It definitely was the biggest stress of her life but she solved the situation the best way.

She waved and screamed for the cars to stop and she got the attention of Loni and Jeremiah Jirik, who stopped to know what the issue of the girl was. They then called the emergency services. Her mother always mentions that her daughter is the reason that she is alive and she is grateful for that and will be for the rest of her life. Everyone is very proud of her because if she just stayed there frightened they wouldn’t be alive. They needed a quick help and they received it thanks to her.

It is very important to teach children what to do in extreme situations, because as we see it can help lives, and also they will be ready to face that kind of situations in life and be partially ready for them.
