The animal looks a bit like a turtle without a shell. Jodi Rownley is a biologist and amphibian specialist who took to Twitter to shut down all speculation and reveal the true identity of this unusual animal.

“This frog is doing the rounds on social media. It’s a Glyphoglossus molossus,” she wrote. The biologist explained that the animal lives in the driest regions of mainland Southeast Asia. “This species spends most of its life underground, waiting for rain. They have an excellent form for digging and storing water.”

The bulbous body makes the frog visible, but it’s actually a way to make itself bigger and scarier for potential danger. It is one of the hidden wonders of nature. In Thailand, this frog is also considered a delicacy.
