The revenge of the young woman who suffered from a skin disease. “Never let anyone to stop you”

We all face challenges in life and it’s being difficult for everyone. Even if it is important to put things into perspective, to tell ourselves that we are not the only ones and that there is worse, it is fundamental to find how to feel better and to talk about it. The story of Mui Thomas is inspiring. This young woman of almost 30 has suffered a lot and spoke about it.

Mui was born with a rare and hereditary skin disease: a very complicated form of ichthyosis. This disease causes her skin to renew ten times faster than normal skin does. And that process causes severe cracking and ultra-irritated skin. This means that his raw and painful skin is very susceptible to infection.

Mui was born in Hong Kong and was placed in an orphanage after birth. Roger and Tina, two immigrants from Germany and UK, were volunteers at the hospital where Mui was treated. Seeing her for the first time, Tina knew that Mui would become her daughter and they would adopt her.

When Mui was suddenly transferred to a mental hospital, the couple knew they had to do something. “She was going to be completely hidden from society there” Roger said. “But mentally she was completely healthy. We had to make a decision.”

The question was therefore whether Tina and Roger could adopt the girl. And they did. 23 years later, Mui is happy and confident young woman. Today, she faces that difficulty with a big smile and,but when she was younger, it was hard for her not to give in to despair.

Mui was seriously bullied in school because of her condition. She was forbidden to go to certain parts of the school because the teachers wanted to protect a boy who was afraid of her. So they didn’t even try to make the situation better, but also made it worse.

Fortunately now Mui enjoys life and the present time. She teaches children with learning difficulties in the Wan Chai district of Hong Kong. She is really happy about her life. Mui says she  always did what she wanted to do, regardless of what other people thought and that is her success to happiness.

Her message to people is to not let anything or anyone stop you, disability or disease – you are on this earth to have fun!
