In 2004, documentary photographer Mark Light, known for capturing unique human stories, ventured into this secluded region to document life far from modern society. His arrival, however, was met with suspicion and resistance.

Determined to understand the community rather than exploit it, Light slowly gained the locals’ trust. That’s when he encountered the Whitaker family—and what he saw was unlike anything he had ever witnessed. Their home was in severe disrepair, surrounded by junk and restless dogs.

The family members—siblings Betty, Lorraine, and Ray, along with their cousin Timmy and brother Freddy—displayed distinct physical traits and unconventional behaviors. Their only means of communication were grunts, growls, and unintelligible sounds, and none had learned to read or write.

Through further research, Light uncovered the source of their condition: generations of inbreeding. The Whitaker family descended from relatives who, in 1937, married within their own bloodline. Over the years, this pattern continued, leading to a concentration of genetic disorders that resulted in severe physical and cognitive challenges.

Yet, beneath their unusual appearance and way of life, Light discovered a family not of spectacle, but of resilience. Despite their struggles, they were gentle and harmless individuals whose story—though tragic—evoked deep empathy rather than mere curiosity.
