Wanting to get a dog or cat, people often turn to animal shelters for help. At the same time, many want the pet to be thoroughbred, with a pedigree and status.

This incident occurred in 1987, in one of the shelters in Montana, USA. A seemingly ordinary pregnant cat, that you can always meet on the streets of American cities, fell into the hands of the organization’s employees. Soon the kitty gave birth to four cute kittens, one of which was distinguished by a curly coat of white and blue color and unusual fur creases on the ears.

The kitten was growing up, and his fur coat stood out more and more against the background of his brothers and sisters. Veterinarians wondered what affected the structure of the coat, but could not determine the exact reason. So, they had to seek advice from Persian cat breeder Miss Jerry Newman.

After examining the baby, she found out that it was definitely not a Persian. The unusual appearance of the kitten intrigued her. The woman kept the cat for herself, naming her Miss DePesto.

When the cat grew up, Jerry introduced her to a Persian cat. Soon the couple had kittens with curly hair. And then the breeder realized that the gene responsible for curls is dominant, therefore, it is possible to breed a new breed of cats.

So, the kitten, born from a homeless cat from a shelter, became the ancestor of a very rare breed of Selkirk Rex, whose cubs now cost a lot of money.

So, thanks to the attentiveness of one woman, it was possible to bring out a beautiful and very attached to a person species, which is distinguished by an accommodating character, friendliness and longevity – Selkirk Rex often live up to 20 years.
