The touching story of Benny the Labrador, a dog who can skate

A Labrador named Benny was the first dog in the world to master this skill. How did he do it?

The Labrador puppy, for whatever reason, was not wanted by any human. He was living in a shelter and from a lack of funds for animals and a place to live, they were preparing to put him to sleep. But Benny’s story suddenly took a very different path.

The puppy was adopted by a figure skating coach. She really loved the dog and didn’t want to be constantly parted from the puppy because of her busy schedule at work and pieces of training.

So she started taking Benny with her. After a while, she noticed that the young dog really liked running on the ice, catching pucks, and playing. She noticed his good coordination. Then she thought of teaching Benny to skate.

Skates were specially made for Benny and put on his front feet. The back legs supported him while he was skating. Pretty soon the dog not only started skating dashingly on the ice but also performing various tricks – turns and various jumps. The owner of the dog says that he gets it easily and with pleasure.

Benny also likes to run on the ice with a stick and manage the puck. His owner said that teaching the dog was no more difficult than teaching a child. She said she has been teaching figure skating for more than twenty years and her own daughter took to the ice at age one and a half.

Benny’s extensive experience and skill as a teacher helped her owner teach him simply by playing. The dog’s high intelligence helped with this. Even before the ice class began, the dog had learned more than 50 common dog tricks, which is an impressive result.

Benny’s owner believes he could make a great inspirational mascot for some hockey team. The story of the dog’s life itself is inspiring: sometimes life turns on an unexpected side and a recent candidate to be put to sleep becomes a happy pet and an extremely popular animal who has mastered a skill unique to dogs.

Before this story saw the light of day, no one would have thought of teaching a dog to skate. Now Benny has won the hearts of many who know about him.
