What the cat’s gaze means

Perhaps any cat owner has noticed from time to time that a pet looks at him intently. This look can be called staring and even drilling. Especially, considering that the animal does not blink.

Even owners, who have a good relationship with the pet, have to cringe at such a hypnotic and prickly look of a cat, from which it simply becomes uncomfortable. What can this look mean – just a strange cat’s character or there are other reasons for it?

The “alien” look in a cat’s eyes

Cats in the world folklore are presented as magical and mysterious animals, not without reason. And even those who are not fans of mysticism, admit that the cat’s eyes are sometimes so mysterious, that they can only be explained by something alien. What can it mean? And do cats look equally at their relatives and people?

Regarding the second question, we can say that cats in any case do not feel much joy at the sight of potential rivals and competitors, because of their territoriality, they look at each other especially closely.

If you think about it, practically all cat conflicts start from the same thing – the stronger (dominant) member of the cat family is staring at the foe. There are several variants of events – the enemy can retreat away from the sizzling stare, try to frighten the enemy with the “sound” or accept the challenge and join the fight.

The nature of a cat’s signature gaze

Since cats are essentially hunters and predators, it is customary for them to make a long and intimate observation of possible prey. The peculiarities of vision allow them to do this.

A human is not given such an ability not to blink for a long time, because he has a need to moisten the visual organs. Therefore, it would be illogical and useless for a human to compete with a cat in a game of “staring”.

Relationships with humans

They don’t give the cat any characteristics whatsoever – it’s cunning, smart, and self-sufficient. All this is true, but at the same time, cats, despite their independence, can not live without humans. That’s why they are always watching their owners, sometimes in disguise, and sometimes in the open. The main purpose of a cat is to benefit itself.

And it’s easy to check it: if the cat sits nearby the master while he, for example, watches TV, as soon as he goes to the kitchen the cat will appear behind him as if from nowhere, looking questioningly into his eyes as if he is asking if he will also get something.

Non-verbal communication

A cat “looks” at its owner for various purposes – as if it’s checking its choice and trying to foresee its possible reaction, at the same time showing what it needs from a human.

A pet learns body language and reads human eyes, it needs to see its owner’s reaction to feeling part of the family. Therefore, it is very important for him to get the same piercing look in return. This way, the cat will gain a certain calmness and confidence, realizing that the owner feels the same way.
