Why a dog’s eyes are leaking

Today I suggest we talk about canine tears. No, more often than not, they don’t come from a rush of emotion, as they do in humans, but are a reason to visit the vet.

In fact, there can be quite a few causes of tears from dogs’ eyes, from breed traits to diseases or mechanical effects (when something gets in the eye). So it is better to establish for sure what caused the tears in your beloved pet.

It happens that in dogs the tears leak a little by themselves, and it is not a cause for concern. But if they, suddenly, became abundant, then it is worth to raise the alarm. Rather strong tears can be observed in too small dogs (for example, toy dogs), or due to the peculiarities of development of the skull and eyes of the animal.

And now for other causes of watery eyes in dogs – if there wasn’t dirt, sand or dust got there and it’s not an allergic reaction to food, household products or smoking owners, the dog’s eyes can be irritated by his own hair (this is not uncommon in longhaired breeds) or eyelashes (it’s observed with eyelid curl and requires medical attention). Often dogs’ eyes bleed when they have an infectious disease, and there are usually other signs of illness as well. If the eye is injured or there are problems with the tear duct – blocked, inflamed, etc., all this can cause the dog to have tears.

Sometimes the problem may occur in one eye, but if we are talking about the treatment of the corresponding disease, it is obligatory to treat the other eye as well. Thus, if foreign objects get in, the owner can cope and himself, washing the pet’s eyes with chamomile, boric acid or even normal boiled water. The hair should be trimmed around the dog’s eyes to keep it out of his eyes.

If the dog is a breed in which this phenomenon is normal, then you will always have to take care of the eyes every day. To do this, it is enough to wipe them with boiled water. Otherwise, the tear fluid will accumulate, becoming a breeding ground for pathogenic bacteria.

Basically, you should be alert if the rinses (for dogs that are not prone to tears) do not give results for a few days, the eyes become cloudy, the dog squints, blinks often and tries to scratch them, vision or the general condition of the animal has deteriorated, the eyes are red.
